Why offer Group Health Insurance?
"Health Insurance is the most appealing work perk that businesses in New Zealand can offer" - Seek.
Support Health and Wellbeing
Health insurance gives eligible staff another way to access private consultations, tests and treatment covered by their policy. It can offer reassurance to employees and their families when a health concern arises.
Help staff get back to their best
Access to assessment and treatment may help employees address health issues sooner. Depending on the circumstances, this can reduce time away from work and presenteeism - when someone is at work but unable to perform at their usual level because they are unwell.
Access cover for pre-existing conditions
For an employee with an existing health condition, a group scheme can be especially valuable. Some schemes cover qualifying pre-existing conditions that an individual policy might exclude or assess separately. This can give staff access to meaningful protection they may struggle to obtain on the same terms themselves. T&Cs apply - the conditions covered, any waiting period and the time allowed to join depend on the insurer and scheme,
Attract and retain good people
Health cover is a tangible benefit that employees can understand and use. A thoughtfully designed programme shows your commitment to their wellbeing and strengthens your wider employment offer.
Why offer Group Life insurance and related benefits?
Health insurance helps with eligible medical costs. Life and disability benefits can provide financial support when a serious event affects an employee’s ability to work or their family’s finances. Depending on the insurer and scheme, you can consider:
Life Cover: support for families
A payment on an employee’s death can help their family manage debt, living costs and other financial commitments. Cover can be a fixed amount or linked to salary, subject to the scheme rules.
Income Protection: support while off work
If illness or injury leaves an eligible employee unable to work, income protection can pay a monthly benefit after a waiting period. Benefit amounts, payment periods and offsets depend on the policy.
Trauma Cover: help after a serious diagnosis
Trauma cover can pay a lump sum if an employee meets the policy definition for a covered serious condition. The money can provide flexibility while they focus on treatment and recovery.
Total & Permanent Disability: long-term security
TPD cover can pay a lump sum if an employee meets the policy definition of total and permanent disability. It can help with the lasting financial impact of being unable to work.
We help you decide which benefits suit your workforce and budget, and explain how they work alongside any cover employees already have.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can employees with pre-existing conditions join?
Often, yes. Whether a condition is covered, and when, depends on the insurer, scheme design and the employee’s joining date. For health insurance, the key number is usually 15+ (in some cases it can be less).
Can staff add their partners, children or extra cover?
For group health insurance - yes. Many schemes allow staff members to add their immediate family members at a personal cost. Often, pre-existing conditon coverage also extends to the family additions if they are added within the required timeframe.
Can we set eligibility rules for different employees?
Yes, subject to insurer requirements. We can help you consider when employees become eligible and how the scheme applies across your workforce, then communicate the rules clearly.
What happens to an employee’s cover if they leave?
Group cover usually changes or ends when employment finishes. Some insurers offer a way to continue certain benefits personally - known as a continuation option, within a limited timeframe. We can help a departing employee understand the options under their scheme.
Does the employer need to pay the full premium?
Not necessarily. Depending on the scheme, you may be able to fund a base level of cover and let employees pay for additional benefits or family cover.
